Text 9: The all-powerful Brahmā, who was born from the lotus flower, pacified the boy with gentle words, accepting his request, and said: Do not cry. I shall certainly do as you desire.
Text 10: Thereafter Brahmā said: O chief of the demigods, you shall be called by the name Rudra by all people because you have so anxiously cried.
Text 11: My dear boy, I have already selected the following places for your residence: the heart, the senses, the air of life, the sky, the air, the fire, the water, the earth, the sun, the moon and austerity.
Text 12: Lord Brahmā said: My dear boy Rudra, you have eleven other names: Manyu, Manu, Mahinasa, Mahān, Śiva, Ṛtadhvaja, Ugraretā, Bhava, Kāla, Vāmadeva and Dhṛtavrata.
Śrīdhara Svāmi-kṛtā Bhāvārtha-dīpikā Vyākhyā

Śrī Vaṃśīdhara-kṛtā Bhāvārtha-dīpikā Prakāśa Vyākhyā
As stated before, Pādma means born from a lotus. With affection and tenderness. That name etc. || 9 || * * Because. Suraśreṣṭha (best among gods) due to being born before all gods. || 10 || ** In the heart means. Due to the appropriateness of those locations for Rudra, the presiding deity of ego in the heart etc. In the case of anger, the heart is indeed the birthplace of anger, and growing there it also resides in the eyes, hands, feet and senses, indicating their respective functions. Similarly in the vital breaths, indicating excess through breathing. Also externally in space through terrifying sounds like those of fierce lions, in air, fire and water through their drying, burning and flooding qualities, in earth through its modifications like hammers, and through combinations of these like lions, snakes etc., in the sun and moon through heat and cold as ways of killing - anger resides in all these. Tapas (austerity) is representative of Sankhya, yoga and detachment, which can also be places of anger in the absence of devotion, as seen in statements like "with anger ignited by austerities". Hence it is said "Having ascended with great difficulty to the highest state, they fall from there, disregarding your feet". || 11 || 21188 * * If it is asked how only one name Rudra is given when multiple names were requested, he says - Manyu etc. Mahinas etc. Some readings have Maheśāna instead. And Ṛtudhvaja here means Ṛtudhvaja. Ugra means one whose semen, characterized by Kumara, is unbearable. But Tīrtha read it as Ūrdhvaretā, which is established by the śruti "He made Virūpākṣa with raised semen". Reading it as Maruretā, he explained it as having fiery semen based on the Yādavakośa "Maru is fire, having a dark path, pure, the fire carrier, wise". || 12 ||
Śrī Rādhā Ramaṇa dāsa Gosvāmi Viracitā Dīpanī Vyākhyā
That is the place of the name. || 9 || Because. || 10 || * * Due to being effects of ego, that presiding deity resides in those places. Even in the case of anger, it resides in the heart etc. Space also kills through its quality of terrible sounds. Fire and water cause dissolution. Earth kills through forms like hammers. The sun and moon kill through heat and cold. Anger should be understood even in austerity, as it is said "with anger ignited by austerities". || 11 || * * The reading is Maheśāna, not Mahinas which is meaningless. || 12-14 ||
Śrīmad Vīrarāghava Vyākhyā
Do not cry, do not weep, I will do as you have said. || 9 || * * He explains the naming. Yad means. O best of gods! Because you cried like an anxious child, therefore people will call you by the name Rudra, which means "one who cried". || 10 || * * He explains the assigning of places. With "In the heart" etc., Rudra resides in the heart as the presiding deity of ego, not as the inner self. Asu means vital breath. Rudra etc. places were made by me for you before. || 11 || He states the different places for the one residing in eleven places. Manyu etc. || 12 ||
Śrīmad Vijayadhvaja Tīrtha-kṛtā Pada Ratnāvalī Vyākhyā
Pādya means Brahmā, mā rodīḥ (do not cry) is the word. || 9 || * He states the main name. Yad etc. || 10 || ** Heart means mind. || 11 || * * How is only one name Rudra given when multiple names were requested? To that he says Manyu etc. Maruretāḥ.
"Maru is fire, having a dark path, pure, the fire carrier, wise. Smoke-bannered, of variegated rays, the burner, carrier of oblations."
From this lexicon, it means having fiery semen. Ūrdhvaretā means one who has maintained his vow, as per the śruti "Virūpākṣa with raised semen, Śaṅkara the blue-throated". || 12 ||
Śrīmad Viśvanātha Cakravarti-kṛtā Sārārtha darśinī Vyākhyā
In the heart means. Due to the heart etc. being effects of ego, and the appropriateness of those places for Rudra, the presiding deity of ego. In the case of anger, the heart is indeed its birthplace, and growing there it also resides in the eyes, hands, feet and senses, indicating their respective functions. Śrīmac Chukadeva-kṛta Siddhānta Pradīpaḥ

Śrīmad Vallabhācārya Viracitā Subodhinī Vyākhyā
Satisfied with just that, Brahmā did even more, saying - Iti etc. Fulfilling his words, he gave names. The intention was that enjoyment should be done in an unmanifest way. As a crying child is consoled with gentle words, he consoled saying - Abhyadhāt etc. Mā rodīḥ is a prohibition. The hidden meaning is "I will do what you desire, and I will give you wives, then you yourself will produce them all equal to yourself". Hence the giving of wives. Two things were requested, and one desired, so there was no giving more than requested. || 9 || * Due to being naturally hidden, he says your name is through action - Yad arodīḥ etc. Because you cried, therefore Rudra. As per the śruti "Because he cried, that is Rudra's own-ness". The suffix 'rak' here is Auṇādika denoting the agent. The vocative Suraśreṣṭha (best of gods) indicates he is not a group Rudra, as they are merely gods, not the best. If it is asked why the name Rudra is given when it was not requested, just as Prārthaka (requester) was not given as a name despite the request being made, he says - Sodvega iva etc. Sodvega means with anxiety. Udvega is mental agitation, in crying there is action of body, speech and mind, hence it generates the name. Shedding tears is physical, sound is verbal, and anxiety is mental. Although the intention was different, the imitation was like that, so the name is like that in the world. He says - Iti. Let the form I made for your crying, meaning "I am the soul of all", be famous in the whole world, so all people will call you by the name Rudra, obtained through your action and gesture. In that case he would again be unmanifest, so he says - Nāmnā etc. || 10 ||
Śrīmad Gosvāmi Śrī Puruṣottama Caraṇa Viracitaḥ Śrī Subodhinī Prakāśaḥ
Regarding "yadarodīr". If the intention of crying is different, then what is the purpose of praying for names etc., hence they say - "aham" etc. Thus, the purpose is to conceal one's own nature. And so "satī" etc. The meaning is that when there is a name with gestures, it will result in the accomplishment of your desire to be unmanifest in your true form. || 10 || Regarding "hṛdi". In the verse. "Ca" indicates combination with tapas. For the accomplishment means for the accomplishment of the work of creation. By that, the Gaṇa Rudras' being the root Rudra manifestation is indicated, hence in the 5th Canto it is said "The eleven-fold manifestation called Saṅkarṣaṇa Rudra". || 11-12 ||
Śrī Giridhara-kṛtā Bāla Prabodhinī
The Lord Padma Brahma, accepting and following such words of that Rudra, spoke with a kind voice aimed at consoling him. He shows that very speech - Do not cry, do not weep, I will do that which you have said. || 9 || * * He speaks of the naming - "yadi". O best of gods, because you cried like a frightened child, therefore the people will call you by the name "Rudra" due to that cause of crying. || 10 || * * He speaks of establishing abodes with "hṛdi" etc. The meaning is - I have already created your abodes like the heart etc. even before your request. Rudra's abode in the heart should be understood as the deity of ego etc., not as the indwelling Self. "Asu" means life-breath. "Vyoma" means space. || 11 || * * He states the eleven different names - "manyur" etc. || 12 ||
Hindī Anuvāda
Then Lord Brahma, born from a lotus, said in a sweet voice to fulfill that child's prayer, "Don't cry, I am now fulfilling your desire." || 9 || * O best of gods! As soon as you were born, you started crying profusely like a child, therefore people will call you by the name 'Rudra'. || 10 || * For your residence, I have already created these abodes - heart, senses, life-breath, space, air, fire, water, earth, sun, moon and penance. || 11 || * Your names will be Manyu, Manu, Mahinas, Mahān, Śiva, Ṛtadhvaja, Ugraretas, Bhava, Kāla, Vāmadeva and Dhṛtavrata. || 12 ||
