SB 2.5.21-24

 

The Lord, the master of primordial matter, when desirous of becoming manifold from the one, accepted time, action and nature that were present in his own form through his own primordial matter. (21)

From the power of the Lord, time alone caused agitation in the three (3) gunas, nature transformed them into another form, and action gave birth to the great principle. (22)

When rajas and tamas increased, the modification that occurred in the great principle was the tamas-predominant modification in the form of knowledge, action and substance. (23)

That became known as egoism, and having undergone modification, it became threefold. Its divisions are: vaikārika, taijasa and tāmasika. O Narada! They are predominantly the powers of knowledge, action and substance respectively. (24)
